Comment:    Fotos Malapascua from Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the photos and thanks also for your hospitality - we both had a great time there, and hopefully we'll be able to head back at some point. I sent a message to Thomas a while back, but still no reply so am guessing that they're still travelling around SE Asia with limited connections. I just received a message from someone about the review I wrote and they wanted to know the directions and booking etc, so I told them they should just go direct to you. Hope you don't mind.

Thanks again, really is an amazing place that you have.

Cheers,

Matt

Comment:    Urlaub bei Dsiosie und Mike

Hallo Ihr,

Comment:      EXOTIC Dive and Beach Resort Malapascua,     Schlecht, schlechter,Exotic”

Hallo

Gruss

Elman

Comment: AABANA Beach & Watersport resort Malapascua, “THE ONE AND ONLY ORIGINAL ISLAND FEELING!!!”

One month together with my wife in Malapascua Island at Mike and Dioses Beach Resort will be forever in my heart and unforgettable!! Best service and price on the island.
Clean and lovely rooms, great breakfast for two persons included. Mike become a real friend of mine in one month living together door on door in the wooden cottage. Very helpful and friendly staff like Charitou in the kitchen. Mike booked my tickets for Cebu-Manila with Philippine Airlines for only 1300 Pesos/person. He was in Cebu , i only asked him if he could look about price and flight date, he came back with our tickets!! One day he take us to his friends of Blue Coral Hotel to the birthday party of the owner! A few times he takes us to Maya with his Boat for free! I could write a lot of things more, but i think everbody should make his own experiences. If you want real original Island Feeling there is only one place i can recommend: MIKE & DIOSE´S Beach Cottage and Watersport Resort!! THANK YOU MIKE FOR YOUR GREAT HOSPITALITY!!

We see us again OLD SEEBEAR!! Greetings from Austria TOM

Comment: Paying Exotic resort

Hi Mike.

I want to react on Ajchosen critic about Exotic. I could pay with CC without any problems. There are not many resorts who can even stand in the shadow of Exotic. The service, food and accomodation are excellent. I was there in the first week of november 2010.

Comment: Malapascua Exotic Island Dive & Beach Resort: Worst resort in Malapascua! Terrible experience!!

I really had a terrible experience in the EXOTIC Resort there. Their staff were in denial about us requesting to pay by credit card and not knowing we were checking out early in the morning to make it back to Cebu City to go on our tour. Then, the owner/general manager kept harassing and threatening us that they'll call the police on us to put us in jail.. They said they wanted cash...not credit card.

SO MANY PROBLEMS WHEN WE STAYED HERE! Receptionist staff were unhelpful. We told them we would be checking out early in the morning due to us being on a tour and if they would accept credit card as a form of payment. They said, "Yes, it's okay for you to check out early in the morning and that you can pay by credit card." We gave them our credit card information on file. The following morning, a security guard was at the front desk telling us that the reception office is closed. We told the security guard that the reception staff is aware that we were leaving early in the morning so we could catch up with our tour group and that they can charge our credit cards since they had them on file.

Later during the day, the general manager, kept calling and threatening/harassing us over why we left without paying. We told him that the receptionist was aware that we were leaving in the morning and that they could charge our credit card. The general manager says they don't accept credit cards and they wanted us to come back to Malapascua to pay in cash or they'll have the police look for us and arrest us. The other option was to pay by Western Union, but they were going to double the price on us.

Also, there is no WIFI as they advertise on their website and on billboards.

The food was really expensive.

I've been to Malapascua 3 times already and this is by far the worst resort on the island. I recommend you avoid this place as there are far better resorts than this one as well as least expensive restaurant.

BEWARE OF THE OWNER/GENERAL MANAGER AS HE WILL CALL THE POLICE ON YOU AND TRY TO PUT YOU IN JAIL!

Hallo Mike,

Hi Mike !

Thank you very much for your emails with the photos and the video.
We arrived at home yesterday night and I discovered everything this morning..

I'll send you our photos soon, with the help of my sons (I am not an expert with internet).

Susan and I (with Maïté and John Etienne) wish to send you our best thanks for the extremely kind hospitality and welcome that you extended to us during our stay at your resort, up to the (successfull)transfer to Maya !
I can definetely state that we never had so nice holidays since we have been married (just 35 years ago...).

We enjoyed very much meeting you and your kind and efficient staff (i.e. Charito, and the old lady, the captain etc...).

We do hope to come again as soon as we can. (next year, or within 2 years at least).

By the way, since you have won the bet we made on the boat before the transfer (by sending the first e-mail), we shall be very pleased to host you  and your wife in our house in Saint Cloud (near Paris) if you once make a stop in France and like to visit us.

Best regards
Jeff and Susan

Been in Malapascua about year ago and I would never, ever dive or stay with Exotic again. We made the mistake of doing a day trip with them to Gato Island. Dive master was inexperienced and did not pay any attention to divers needs. Also do not take packed lunch from Exotic. Even the fish wont eat it! When we complained to Exotic abt their divemaster, they turned around and told us it was not possible as they are the best. Also, refused to refund us for the disgusting sandwich they gave us. Fun and Sun is much better dive operator.

Hello Mike!

This is Martina writing, me and Per (Pelle) stayed at your place “Mike & Diose’s Beachcottage” about a month ago. I have attached the picture that was taken on us on our way to Cebu, and I would like to thank you once again for your hospitality and kindness. We had a great visit in the Philippines!

Except for Malapascua, we really liked Dumaguete and Sugar Beach. I don't know if you have been to Sugar Beach, but it reminded a bit of Malapascua. There was only one beach with about four or five resorts and it was sooo beautiful. Dumaguete was a nice town with everything within walking-distance. We probably liked it so much because we could find everything we wanted there and the food was super cheap, much cheaper than Malapascua; we had tasty chicken and rice for only 60 pesos.

Thanks again Mike and take care!

Comment: Norwegian tourist died on Christmas eve 2009 during dive with EXOTIC Dive Resort Malapascua

I'm a fan of Malapascua Island and was several times on this beautiful island. So among other things i stayed in "Exotic" and also with "Mike & Diose Beach Cottage" (AABANA). While in Exotic i loved the friendly atmosphere and friendly service at the restaurant. With "Mike & Diose" i loved the overall and  everywhere friendly and helpful presence of MIKE, who is probably by far the nicest and best host on the island .

When I read the EXOTIC condolences to their guest diver Aksel who died tragically on 24.12.2009 in EXOTIC, ( http://www.malapascua.net/news.html) it touched my heart so much. However I am horrified as Exotic stoke their condolences with personal and not traceable attacks on MIKE, misusing the condolence for personally obvious problems between them and Mike, whatever may be the reason.

I know Mike very well, he's an honest guy and a fantastic host. I am sad and can not believe what EXOTIC write in their condolence. Too bad, I would have expected more style of Exotic dive shop and am deeply disappointed and shocked over this aggression and that they are fallen to this deep level of decency. And to Mike, i hope he gives an comment to us why EXOTIC retract their claws against him.

I am without doubt in accordence to Susie  that Mike & Diose’s is the best place to stay on Malapascua, it is beautiful and has character, the people you will meet there are friendly and care about treating guests very well and MIKE is a super chap who made me feel right at home straight away. But at all, Yet, we miss our time in Malapascua! It was so nice place to stay.

Hello Mike,

It’s Susie who stayed in your cottage over a month ago.  I’m missing the Philippines a lot! I had such a lovely time there.

Mike and Diose’s

Mike and Diose’s is the most wonderful place to stay.  Mike is a super chap who made me feel right at home straight away.  I loved hearing his stories and was impressed by how well his animals were kept. The turkeys, geese and dogs looked like they were happy and healthy, that was amazing for me - a veggie, animal-lover J

Charita made a lovely breakfast every day and kept the place in tip-top condition.  On one night we had a great dinner that I ordered from Charita, the meal was fresh, tasty and wholesome.  The cottages are great, with beautiful, locally made wooden chairs and tables, they are clean and extremely comfortable.  The room that is also available is comfortable and clean with 2 beds with good mosquito nets.  The gardens are lovely and it was a joy to see them being tended to with such care.  I am without doubt that Mike and Diose’s is the best place to stay on Malapascua, it is beautiful and has character, the people you will meet there are friendly and care about treating guests very well!  Look out for Mike’s amazing white ship on the bright white sand on the north end of the main beach.

Hi, I find your website very informative. However, I just need to point out one thing about travelling on the road though. I don't think that it is entirely correct to say that people share the roads with water buffalo. From all the years that I lived in Cebu I've never seen any water buffalo's on the road. Which part of Cebu do you live?

Hi Mike, My wife, little boy and I spent the night on Malapascua Island last saturday night. We were touring northern Cebu on the motorcycle and last minute decided to take a boat to Malapascua and spend the night. On the boat ride over I got talking to one of the boats crewmembers named Dennis. He was accompanied by his wife and baby. Dennis directed us to stay at the Palm place, saying it was the best value on the island. I later found out we were overcharged for our room. Im suspect Dennis was paid well for bringing us there. We ate dinner and breakfast at a place next to where Dennis lives and were overcharged there also. I rented a motorcycle from a guy there and we explored the island Sunday morning. He had a good price for the rental without even having to bargain. Despite the typical overcharging of unsuspecting Foriegners by some filipinos I found the island a nice place. I had a nice talk with the guy whose wife owns the miniature golf course. We plan on coming back to Malapascua very soon. I want to try kiteboarding on the windward beach. When I got back to my home in Talisy I looked at your website again. I wish that I had printed out the information about accomodations before my trip there. Anyways I will be much better prepared next time. I would have looked you up but I didnt remember where to find you. Maybe we will meet on our next visit which will be soon. Sincerely, Jim

Read some of the comments there regarding the 30-meter easement. Now it’s 40 meters. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources have planted concrete monuments for the delineation. Maldito, White Sands, and La Dolce Vita will be completely wiped out. mesyong

My information was wrong. It is correct that ALL buildings on the island inside 30 meters from high tide must be removed according to an order from DENR. But White Sand is not affected. All the buildings situated in the White Sand compound are declared legal and will not have to be demolished. The owners consider leaving the island because they want the best for their children. This has been explained to me. Sorry for misinformation. Charles Layton.

Hello, We just came back from Malapascua, living in Manila. First I want to say that this site is great and helped us with information about the island and the resorts. Thanks! Also we're looking for a lot on the upper west coast of Malapascua. We spotted a place on a rock, not far from the light house and the actor, who's building a house there. Only we need to find the owner, but time slipped away from us and we had to go back home. Is there any chance that anyone would know who owns any of those parts on the west side, any piece between the lighthouse and Mangrove resort. We only need maybe 1500 to 2500 sqm. Thanks so much, Sara

Nice site with good information. But i want to inform you that the Manila times reports regarding Banahaw that you posted need some corrections like "Lucena Protected Area Management Board" The correct info are "Protected Area Mangement Board or PAMB" the said board is not a municipal watch dog as they reported, but a highest policy making body mandated by law the National Integrated Protected Area Act(NIPAS Act) or RA 7586. Said board are task to create policies to manage and protect Mts. Banahaw - San Critobal Protected Landscape (MBSCPL).The PAMB composition are as follows: DENR - Region 4 Regional Director as Chairman, the members are: One representatives each from the office of the Provincial Governor in the provinces of Quezon and Laguna, three representatives from NGOs and POs, reps from academe(SLPC), National Power Corp., ten reps from 10 municipalities and fifty plus reps from the barangay or villages sorrounding MBSCPL. Manny Calayag not "Calbayog" is one of the member of the PAMB representing the municipality of Dolores, Quezon not Lucena. Hope you consider this information. Mike Wieland

White Sand: I heard that "White Sand" and others like Maldito, have to demolish all their nipa huts and buildings, cause of an order from DENR. No building are allowed and should be build withhin 30 meters from the high water line of the beach, because this is public beach. Thats why they want to sale (6200 sqm) and are looking for a buyer of their lot.

This is in connection with the question from Nina of gimmickera@yahoo.com. My husband and I stayed in this wonderful place last year. At that time they had electricity from 5 pm - 4 am. It seemed adequate as sunrise is 5 am. During daytime we were either island hopping with captain Georff, snorkelling, diving, lazing in White Sands hammocks, tanning on their really white beach or hanging out on our balcony enjoying the refreshing sea breeze. If you really need 24 hours electricity then you obviously plan to spend the whole day inside the room. If that is the case why travel to a small island at all? The bungalows at White Sand are maybe the only local style kind of accomodation on the whole island and it never gets hot inside. They are indeed basic but charming and the bathroom is tiled and clean. We usually stay in more upmarket places but found it so refreshing living in a place that is unpretentious, functional and native. Build in accordiance with the old traditions of the Philippines. We actually cancelled our reservation in a first class hotel in Boracay so we could extend our stay at White Sand Bungalows another 10 days. The staff and the owners are such friendly people. If you want to know more I suggest you contact the owners directly at whitesandbungalows@hotmail.com or visit their homepage at www.filippinerne.dk/whitesand. It is not the last time we have been to Malapascua Island or White Sand Bungalows. Greetings, Josefina from Canada.

We were shocked a little bit to see Malapascua again after 32 months. It didnt't change for better, much more rubbish, it seems until now they have no waste management. Sad but true, the beach isn't so white anymore, a lot of sand is gone, numerous pumpboats on the beach, noise from Karaoke-Bars; no more unhindered strolls around the island, reckless motorbike-drivers chase you everywhere, even on narrow paths. Still the same is Mathias from Sunsplash, very obtrusive with his big but ridiculous show for lousy but high-priced food. La Isla Bonita is still doing very well and continues to serve huge portions of gorgeous meals for very affordable prices. Not only in my opinion its still the best restaurant on Malapascua amid the new La Dolce Vita Restaurant. But nothing in common with Italian food, cheap canned tomato sauce though they promised fresh one for our order,a lot of flavor enhancer and we believe only frozen fish and seafood because unlike La Isla Bonita they weren't able to show their marlin or prawns on request. Tasteless pizza with thumbnail-size toppings(Where was the mozzarella?)In this connection I remember my old pizzaiolo who taught me 200 grams crust=200 grams toppings.Right? But at least a touch of Italian 'Ambiente': The prices are beyond good and bad, they are simply crazy like in Italy. Hopefully the resort of Malapascua will still exist when we come back next time! Greetings to that guy with backpack who bothered us ten times a day in our sunbed to buy a T-Shirt.You were successful, we bought two! Thank you for the relaxing massages to ...we forgot her name and thank you to La Isla Bonita for the superb New Year's Eve dinner.

This guest book seems to be very much open to everyone comments on resorts and restaurants... My wife and I, have been several times to Malapascua for the past three years and have tried quite a few resorts, not by choice, but because our favorite place, Cocobana was not always available. We do agree with the fact that with the years passing by, the natural look of the island is slowly affected, while overall it still remains a small paradise north of Cebu, fortunately. With more tourists (locals and foreigners) aware of Malapascua, it is not anymore guarantee to find a peaceful and quiet beach on week-ends or on public holidays the way it was years ago. Now, the visitor may have to choose the right time which fits his/her expectations. Try this coming week-end (long week-end) and I bet the nights will be kind of noisy, with bondfires on the beach, noisy campers, young people having a good time singing funny tunes and quite a lot of trash left behind). We will be there actually. Reading the other comments, it looks like a war is taking places between the resorts/restaurant operators on the island. So what ? This happens all over the world and guests should not be affected by such "normal" behavior. If a restaurant, a restaurant, a dive shop does not fit someone's taste, then there are others places to go to. Just take it easy and relax. Malapascua is a fun island to be and a great diving base.

I was staying by Sunsplash Resort...and nice rooms...bequem...but they said at the moment is only electric fan because the resort is just finished so I understand,,,,I get crazy to others that they were complaining about sunsplash that there is no aircon.....actually i went there only to enjoy the island and the weather as well not to have aircon rooms because here in Germany is very cold cold. To Mathias, the owner of sunsplash just don´t care what they were saying..ist not true what they said because I´ve been there....so fabulous place for me... I am half Cebuano / english living in London and I have been to Malapascua twice to take a little break from hectic life in Cebu City when visiting my family - I visited in 2000 and again in 2003. It really changed in those three years - it is so much more developed now which is not necessarily a great thing but at least you can get a nice cold beer all day! Your site is excellent - a one stop shop for all the information you need to make a good choice on accommodation that would suit your tastes. I really hope that with the extra development the owners of the resorts are learning to take better care of the bazura - the quality of the beach / water / diving is the the main attraction so it is really important that this island paradise does not get spoilt if tourism is going to flourish. Eco-tourism is the way forward! I am so proud to be a filipina, I am always recommending people go there as I feel it is severely underrated. Everyone who goes there on holiday always comes back saying how wonderful the people are and what a great time they had. Your website is great because it really shows how great it is! Nice one!!!!

To all Malapascua fans, you don't smell something fishy again about Sunsplash? Check it out! There were definetely no aircon-rooms for rent as promised in billboards and other advertisements, a Swiss guy from a neighbouring resort confirmed it. Come on Sunsplash, you like to fool again? The rooms in Sunsplash are very hot, you can't stay there without aircon. No cosy veranda in front like all the other resorts, instead the crazy bar with a lot of drunkards and other scrap who like to drink for their country and ring the bell. In the back noisy locals with Karaoke, fighting cocks and family trouble all the time. It's known, the best choice is Cocobana, today and tomorrow.

Malapascua Exotic Dive & Beach Resort.

Mangrove Oriental Beach Resort

 ------------------------------------------------------------

1.)     La Isla Bonita
A very pleasant restaurant, very friendly service and a steak with roasted potatoes one dreams of, want to say the best steak with best taste I ate since a long time. Very very recommendable.

2.)     Sunsplash
I was there for supper. The service was not really friendly, rather something worry, had perhaps a straight long night behind. We had ordered Cutlet but got cutlet with a lot of pepper. But it tasted (forget the pepper) really well and it was a GIANT PORTION also enough for 2 persons. All in all a pretty ambience, good meal and large portions. My judgement to this is really recommendable.

3.)     Dolce Vita
Italian restaurant with Italian specialities in particular naturally PIZZA of more different kinds. For friends of PIZZA "This" is their Restaurant. We ourselves were unfortunately not there, however friends and neighbours have recommend it to us.

4.)     Ging Gings Eatery
In this place you get all Philippine standard food to extremely favourable prices. Who however prefferes a maintained Ambiente is wrongly at this place. The offered "Home larva Bread" (It should be German grey bread) however is very tasteless.

Malapascua Exotic Dive & Beach Resort.
The reproaches of a Guestbookwriters are not traceably. Good tasteful meal, nice Resort (here you get the real Holyday feeling). Also the "House Reef" complained by a Guestbookwriter in form of a sank Jeepney, I cannot confirm. The sunk vehicle has meanwhile (planned by EXOTIC in such a way) became a real REEF before the coast with many tropical fish inhabited and covered from plants and Corals, which particularly offers diving experiences ideal for diving beginners. This idea should be developed further! This Resort is one of the prettiest on the whole island. One gives oneself substantial trouble to environmental protection and tries successfully so far as possible to protect Sea Live. To recommend much

Mangrove Oriental Beach Resort
Of my opinion this is the prettiest Resort on the whole island. Three large fantasyful "Cottages" with enormous much place (the largest Cottages on the island) in the midst of a flower splendour in the middle on a hill directly at the Mangrove Bay. These three Cottages have different style with pretty equipment and large teracces with sea view. A dream comes true. Additionally there are some Beachcottages directly at the beach of the Mangrove bay. Likewise prettily and very fantasyful furnished. Here each little thing is correct. One notices that boss JOSEFINE handles even details with love. To recommend very much The Resort is on the Island very difficult to find, it is not out-described. One needs a Guide for the first time to find this beautiful Resort. At present no own restaurant, one must have meals in one of the restaurants on the island.

Hi, You have an awesome site!!! Keep up the great job. I visited Malapascua a couple of years ago & it lived- up to my expectations. It's a smaller version of Boracay but better than the former in my opinion. Isla Mujeres in Carribbean Mexico fails in comparison but Cozumel is almost the same in terms of diving sites. Regards. Domo Arigato Gozaimasu...

Hallo Malapascua-Fans! Weiter so!!!

Well, Malapascua may be a great spot for divers, but for somebody who likes to frolic on the beach and in the water it's not to recommend. Polluted water in front of Cocobana (Oil, sewage, garbage), human waste on the beach early in the morning. And garbage everywhere in the hinterland, not only from locals. Two places, Blue Water Beach Resort and Ging-Ging's Flower Garden, deposit their garbage just beside La Isla Bonita Restaurant. May be that's their contribution to push down the reputation of La Isla Bonita. It would be much better they try it with quality and don't show their primitive attitude, specially the worn out Philippine owner with her British hubby from Blue Water. It seems, that some resorts and restaurants take advantage of travelers like us before the island will dissappear from tourists' map.Cocobana charge for very basic aircon cottages almost 40 bucks, but at 6 am locals gather in front of the veranda to celebrate the coming day and occupy the hammocks and sunbeds. During the whole day noisy locals pass beside the cottages, hooting with their motorbikes in the back or the same masseuse bothers you three times daily. Why the management can't protect his guests? Look to Alona Beach or Boracay, no native will disturb you in the resorts. Beside Sunsplash or Danio is "The first Italian Restaurant", who consider their guests as cows whom they can milk, too. A micro-wave mini lasagne or a "Frutti di mare" pizza with a raw crust, 4 slices canned anchovies and 5 pieces squid for 200 Peso each. Sorry, from Italians we expect much more.We can recommend La Isla Bonita and during our couple of days on the island it got our favorite dining place. And we weren't the only ones, every night they were fully booked. All in all: You don't miss anything when you don't go to Malapascua.

I was on Malapascua From december through January and I had a great time. I stayed at White Sand and i believe it is the best place to stay on the island. OK the island is not for everyone, there is a rawness about it, there is garbage, but for me it was fantastic. Had some great times at the Blue Water bar, Nigel the owner is a great host and his resort would also be a good place to stay. Ate often at Ging Ging's, very cheap, I can recommend La Dolce Vita for very good quality Italian food. If you go there soon try and hire a boat to take you to Calangaman Island before they build the resort there, it is stunningly beautiful and if you stay at White Sand or Blue Water tell Kurt Or Nigel that Col and Flor say Gday!!!!

Fazit: Ein rundum gelungener Urlaub Grüße an Malapascua Fazit:

War in Malapascua, habe mir alles mal angeschaut. Erster Eindruck, schoen. Huebsche Bedienungen. gute Life Musik am Wochenende. Marcel Bundi Australia

Just a warning to new people going to Malapascua: When we first arrived a small man with on the beach called Marcus told us, that Sunrise Resort also known as Danio Resort was the best place. Yes it is the best place if you like broken pipes in the toilet! All the cottages there are duplex - double houses. So one never have any privacy! The Sunrise Resort has no trees and it is always too hot. The food is lousy and overpriced. This you feel after waiting/waisting 1 hour for cold scrambled eggs! All afternoon and night we had to listen to karaoke from the neighbor! We later found out that Marcus' aunt owns Sunrise, so that is why he got us away from the place we were recommended in Moalboal. We wanted to go to White Sand, but when we finally after 2 nights decided to go there it was already full. But we could easily see it is a much better place. That is probably why it is so popular with travellers and divers. Anyway Malapascua was a pleasant surprise and we will go back there next year again. Herbert and Susanne.

We stayed Malapascua Dec. 19 till 27 2003. Negative: Dirty Bounty Beach, rubish and gullet everywhere - dangerous to walk without sleepers on some parts of the beach. Dirty water! Around the area of Peder Baadmans looks like shit! Still dynamite-fishing (during a dive!), that's why almost no fish to see during the dives around the island. "Catch of the day" doesn't exists, seafod usually is imported from Cebu City! Noisy open disco from 5 pm till 5 am. Litter all over the island. Sunsplash: all the negative postings must be true! We stayed there once (the first and the last time) and payed for a mango jus (not fresh!) 80 Peso... nowhere in the Philippines l ever payed more than 50 Peso! Positive: Nice Restaurants with good food; for example "Isla Bonita", "Ging-Gings Flower Garden", "Dolce Vita", even though the disagreeable Italien boss scolds so with his employees in front of the guests. Exotic-Island Resort to recommend: Nice Divecenter, deluxe-rooms, friendly staff, good Restaurant. Combined: Malapascua is ok for some days, but l will not go back there. It's easier to go to Boracay where the beach is much cleaner and lager and the water quality higher. Also the diving is no reason to go to Malapascua, it's not better than in Boracay (it was not my idea to compare Malapascua with Boracay!).

good news: the maldito restobar is almost bankrupt cos nobody want to eat their lousy micro waved food. and now even the locals had had enough: a new law prohibts them to make any more noise after 10 pm night. mathias from sunsplash is bailing out, now he wants to leave the island for good. the best and most private place to stay is in white sand bungalows in the sunset cove. its behind the rock hotel. away from the stupid tourist's ghetto on cocobananas side. its around 2-400 peso a night. great cheap food there too, but for guests only. 2004 they will open a dive shop for those who want a not expensive dive. the other dive shops have an agreement to fix the high price. white sand bungalows you can mail at: whitesandbungalows@hotmail.com and phone: +63 927 318 7471. the owner and his wife are great no bullshit people. if you want to piss on the local people who already have a hard life, then go to kuan ba/wobbly boot resort. malapascua's only swimming pool pumps its water from the local's drinking water. often they have no water for drinking, cooking, showering or cooking. johnny walker the manager have made several 'donations' to the barangay captain. so the local only got YOU the guest to count on. stay away from that place! aside from all the sad things development can do to a small enviroment then the island is still the best place to stay in the philippines...

We observed the discussion about Sunsplash and we don't like to hide our experience any longer. Two times we were on Malapascua and the first time we got trapped like many other ones. The food was rotten, together with other guests we suffered intense stomach problems for many days. After we complaint Mr. Sunsplash told these sympthoms were caused from our breakfast or the ice cubes in Cocobana. But thats not all, after we checked our bill we realised to get fooled.Well, we had to pay the commission for the S........er diving school, who recommended Sunsplash. It's really no good reputation for them, they should know the dining places. A few days ago we were again on Malapascua and in the meantime we know where is the best place to eat.None of the fancy trappings of the other Restaurants on the island and considering its location, it can be mistaken as your regular resto.Hesitant at first, we decided to stay around. We had a good feeling of the place and besides , from experience, its in the most unlikely places you often find good food-we took the chance. Our instincts were right! Not only did we have unforgettable meals but a good time, as well. We took our waiter's suggestion to start with their Antipasti and its brought out true Italian taste. Then came one of their many specialities, crunchy Pizza with fresh home-made tomato sauce and loads of toppings and their fish fillet with mozzarella baked in the oven. The succulent fish and basil with cheese made up a flavorful perfection. And you are assured of the freshest catch served right to your table. It was the best meal we ever had in the Philippines. And all the other meals, mostly fish, chicken or meat, as well. The portions are huge, the prices very reasonable, you get value for your money. Look for this restaurant in native style, it has only 6 tables or so and a Spanish name. Its billboards and menu are on the beach, during daytime it's easy to find but in the evening you'd bring a flashlight. Enjoy your meals!

The resaurant at Cocabana was great and so was the service. We plan to be back for a few days during the Christmas holidays and hope to see sunny weather this time. Dan in Texas

I am impressed with this website. I appreciate the tales, the sites, the beaches and the scenic beauty of this island paradise. I can only hope that they will preserve this isolated paradise that still exist in this planet. This island is one in a million. Modernization and industrialization will eventually creep into this part of the world and will exploit them for money and fortune. I came from this beautiful island and I hate to loose the beauty of nature. I hope that we will be able to preserve this paradise. Modernization is slowly creeping into this natural beauty of this magnificent islands paradise. Malapascua is unique, people with money does not seem to realize this. If you create something in a paradise like this, think of blending into the natural habitat and structure of the land without destroying the beauty of the island and its natural habitat. Building concrete and resorts somehow destroys the natural wonders and beauty of this small peace of land. Please try to think of the consequences later on.

Really nice to see Malapascua online - well done! Its a real laid-back, back-to-basics kind of place! The Swansea 'Mafia' boys visited in Feb 2002 and stayed at Monte Luna. Big shout goes out to Nigel at Blue Waters.... never forget your Welsh boyo! and to Ken of Malditos. We were the guys who overfilled and sank the 'floating bar' taxi if you were lucky enough to have witnessed it.. Hysterical! Also 'hi' to Reno the DM at Divelink. Gato Island would have been a fantastic dive with better vis (only had 6-7m) Watch out for the dynamite fishermen though.....! Don't bother with the Japanese cargo wreck!! And then there's Shark Point..... Let's just say it'll be talked about for the rest of my life! About the crossing from Maya....keep your important documents etc. on you in a waterproof pouch! Would love to visit the island again some day! Be nice to visit the island again some day.

Malapascua - the paradise has lost! Increasing flesh trade in and around Maldito, the ultimate place for prostitution on the island. Just a few days ago a new batch of girls arrived from neighboring provinces to "entertain" male guests. In Cocobana, once the first choice, outsiders bother you on the veranda of your cottage, they sit on your sunbed or in your hammock and women like to give you private lessons in a special kind of massage. The whole Bounty Beach is a market place and garbage everywhere, even underwater. No more reason to go there. Search the web for www.elac.org.ph/malapascuajuly17.html

Hiiii Mike & Diose, Good day! Though this guestbook is more for the Germans and other foreigners as can be gauged from the ones signing it, I venture to comment, that u may know. Mike, You're great to have come up with a site like this, very informative, truthful (though there may be unintentional mistakes here and there, to which we should give allowance), and supportive/positive of the Philippines, which cannot be said of some foreigners. And imagine, even cultural info and other links are included in your site! Great effort and time were inputted in its making, and i salute you for this, realizing now that this is non-commercial. Foreigners like you are very much welcome to our land, may our tribe increase! Hmmmmm, yes, as you are married to a Filipina, and this we have to thank God for! For a bit of info about myself: I'm a Filipina civil engineer, married to a Filipno mechanical engineer(Edwin), with 5 grown-up children who have all finished school. :) thank God! We have a small internet cafe here in Cebu City. The family of my married daughter have come to visit us here from Thailand and a whole bunch of our family intend to go to Malapascua for an overnight this weekend, God willing. That's how we have "discovered" your very informative site. We wish to talk to you personally, have to go over the site again for your phone, or you can email it to us? Thanks so much, wish to befriend you and Diose! :) Ed joins me in sending you our best wishes, and may God's blessings be upon you as you continue to sow goodwill for our beloved country! Good Day! I find the site about Malapascua really good. Too bad, I went there without checking the site first. I only have one comment about the island though. The people in there or the locals seem not to know how to care for the island yet. It is evident by the trashes that litter the the beacb and the water itself. It is so frustrating that when I was so excited to see what was under the water, I was greeted by the very ugly site of used jeans, sacks, empty plastic containers, and a whole lot more. That was on the bounty beach. Sux! that was like manila bay! I do understand that garbage disposal is really the problem of Filipinos. And that the locals are not so much aware of the potencial benifit of tourism on them. Thus, I highly suggest and recommend that the local oficials and the resort owners must work hand in hand to do something about this waste management problem. Coz its so Sayang. the island is real nice. Thanks & more power. Rodiego Charles

Hi Mike, some more information about my last visit to Malapascua. They are may useable to your visitors. Dive Link are a new dive shop opened up within the Blue Water Resort.(next to Cococabana and Sea Explorers who let me down by not showing for a morning dive) A Filipino married to an Italian, Gary is a marine biologist and a terrific bloke. His wife Danielle is also lovely and they have a son Paolo, nice kid. Gary can be contacted on gary@cebu.weblinq.com He has been diving for twenty years or more and knows his stuff. The shop has all new Italian dive gear. The chief instructor is a great Japanese guy, Fuji and the rest of the crew are all Filipino's. They have the fastest boat on the island, a 30 foot open whaler with 200hp Mercury outboard. We leave for the shark dive at 6.30 when the rest go at 5.30am and we are there same time as them and then back well before them without the slow passage which leaves some people sea sick on rough days. We had 1.5-2m seas the days I dived there, Force6 NE or better winds and chop. (I sail my own small yacht so it didn't worry me). Blue Water Resort is run by Nigel and Janet, he's Welsh and she is a local girl. Nice people too and the rooms are basic but clean. Fan with bath and double bed from P600, twin doubles etc P1200, top rate. Meals were the best I had, even better overall in value than Sunsplash actually. Cococabana's restaurant was always empty and a guy who had eaten there said it wasn't good. We checked out The Rock, a new bar and resort on the point. Run by Nigel's brother in law it is obviously Filipino as soon as you step in to the place. One guest said it should be called the Roach! Near there is Maldito's (Naughty in Visayan). This place is on the small beach to the west of the main beach on the way to the lighthouse. A giant nipa hut, open to the air on three sides it has pool tables and a great bar and handcuffs nailed to the roof coloumns. Nice decor in native fashion. The food was ok but I had heard they use local ice and a few had come down with belly aches. This place rocks every night and the bass can be heard from most of the rooms in all but the furthest resorts! Its open 24 hours and only calms down around 4am on busy nights. An Englishman married to a girl from Dumaguete, Ken runs the place but spends most of the day at the Blue Water bar! Nice fellow. New Years Eve saw much revelling. BWR had a roast pig cooked over a pit of coals in the sand, the floating bar did a roaring trade and headaches were had by all. The weather got rough and the boat crossing was a guaranteed wet trip. Dannielle and her son were in the water taxi that capsized in Maya harbour and all 6 adults and 3 kids (could have been more!) and their luggage got soaked. Luckily the kids were wearing life jackets. Touts at Maya were the usual problem. They try and get a special trip from everyone. Or else they say there is no transport back and you need to ride a motorcycle taxi. I saw four adults and a small child on a 125cc Yamaha! The D'Rough Riders Bus leaves after 4pm, despite what they say. First trip is 1.30am and then half hourly from then. What else can I tell you? The viz was crap most of the time but the sharks were worth it! Cheers, Perry.

Guten Tag! Love your site. I have just yesterday returned from spending New Years on Malapascua. Your site was invaluable background before going there. I dived with the Thresher Sharks and it was awesome. A few updates on prices and travel details follow if you like. Firstly, the buses also go from the Ayala Mall in Cebu City. The last bus from the Northern Bus Terminal leaves at 7.30pm according to the "Inspector" I met in DaanBantayan. Of course, arriving at Maya after 4pm is not reccomended as you suggest due to lack of boats going across. The last few km's of road are shocking but the Shell gas station just outside Maya has a clean CR (toilet). We found touts accosted you as soon as you got to the wharf in Maya. We were told "special trip" was P600 and there would be no boats going for three hours. Actually there was one filling up right then and the fare was P50. However the captain wanted P200 from each of three groups on board. Given I was there with my Filipina girlfriend and the other groups were a japanese couple and ten Filipino's, we declined and paid the P50 each as previously agreed. The little "water taxi" that takes you to the boat at low tide and around Decenber when the tides is very low cost an additional P10 each. We had two people in a big boat and there were 8 in a tiny one, very Filipino. On the way back one of them capsized in rough conditions throwing all 6 adults and 4 kids and their luggage into the water. This boat was maybe 4m long, maybe less! Everyone got wet but lived. The crossing can be rough and will be wet. We stayed at the Blue Water Resort, rooms from P600 to P1200 with bath and fan. Great beach bar and restaurant and well run by Nigel and his wife Janet. I dived with Divelink there and Gary, they were great. Not so for Sea Explorers next door who left two of us waiting from 04:55am to 07:30am for a shark dive. No one showed and the boss was apparently drunk somewhere. Sunsplaash was good but a long wait for the excellent pizza's. Meldito's was rocking but the ice there is local and suspect. Blue Water make their own. ANy more info wanted? Just email me. Cheers, Perry.

I am a born Cebuana & married an American in Calfornia...my question is could you able to upgrade your website that where I can play the Sinulog festival? I wish my husband to let him see since he didn't know anything about the big & popular festival in Cebu. He never been exprience to witness this festival...That's why I am really interested to purchase a Sinulog vedio and wish we could see it in the website too which I tried it but only the audio sound we can hear but the dance we cannot see because seems the website is not upgraded or I don't exactly what's wrong why it didn't play the dance. I hope you could help my interest to see your website and to purchase this Sinulog vedio. I don't mind if it's not the recent Sinulog as along as I have it just for the sake of my husband and my 4 year old daughter...Thank you and regards to you and the staff of Malapascau. P.S. I don't know just to be curious what Malapascua means and how you name it and who or what it represents for?

Hi Florian, Thank you for signing our guestbook. Yes you are right, this floating bar is EL DORADO Beach Resort in Dumaguete. I have a lot of pictures about Malapascua and other locations, and this one became erroneously the floating bar Malapascua. I will correct it soon. Thank you again.

I was reading this page of yours and I just can't believe what I've read... http://www.malapascua.de/Cebu/Mactan/hauptteil_map_mactan.html " December 4, 1840, when Spanish Governor-General Francisco Alcala approved the plan to construct a monument in Punta Engaño, Mactan, in HONOR of Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese "discoverer" of the Philippines. " What??? The Philippines was discovered by a foreigner??? How could that be??? Was it lost??? The Philippines has been there with stablished commerce with China, Borneo, etc. long before Spaniards came! What kind of a Filipino are you??? " MAGELLAN MARKER, Punta Engaño Lapulapu......."It is an important landmark that, even today, has not been given the full care and respect it deserves." Source from Sun*Star Weekend " What kind of respect do you want for a foreign aggressor like magellan??? What kind of respect do you think he deserve while Spaniards call you "Indio"??? Mangmang??? You want to give respect to a foreigner who raped your country??? It only shows that you don't know how to love your country's freedom in the hands of foreign agressors! You have to change your thinking my friend before it's too late... The Philippine Legacy should not die in the hands of Filipinos like you.

From: EDOLERA@webtv.net (ELMER A. DOLERA) To: office@malapascua-Island.com Hi Mike Do you have tennis courts? Elmer - United States ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi ELMER, Im so sorry, there are no tennis courts on the whole island. Malapascua is a tiny small island with a few beachresorts and nothing else, the only possibility is to play basketball or volleyball on some places or perhaps rent a small boat from OSCAR BOAT RENT. Electricity is from 6:oo pm to 11:30 pm. You need a lamp to walk around the island when its getting dark (7:00 pm). There are no streets, only small ways connecting the different fishing villages on this island. BUT, in the evening you can watch TELEVISION!!!!! in some of the beachresorts restaurants. Regards Mike

Thanks for your email and for the information on Malapascua. Seems like the place is full up for Easter Week so we're going to Bantayan Island instead. But we'll still visit your island on day trips. Any idea how long it takes to get to Biliran Island from Malapascua? Thanks again, Joanne -------------------------- Answer from Mike: Hi Joanne, yes its always the same. On holidays Malapascua is almost fully booked. We heard this from a lot of visitors. It is just a matter of search and try. Some visitors just drop in and look for rooms. Even if the Beach resorts are fully booked, you can get sometimes accomodation in private rooms in the barrio. But it´s not for sure. So if you are not an adventurer, it is really better to prebook somewhere else. It is a good idea (in my opinion) to go to Bantayan Island instead of Malapascua even if you cannot compare those two islands. A boatride from Bantayan Island to Malapascua is about 2-2.5 hours depending upon the weather. From Malapascua to Biliran about 3.5 hours by pumpboat. If you want to make a trip to Biliran, it is recommend to stay one night and return the next day. We wish you a nice vacation. It would be nice, after your return, if you could give us a short feedback about your vacation, so we can share to other visitors your experiences. best regards mike & Diose
